Ultra-large container ship order tide gradually stopped

It is reported that although the container shipping industry may face the problem of excess capacity in the next two years, there are signs that market demand in 2016 may catch up with the expected level of capacity. At present, the tide of container ship orders has almost stopped, and the demand for freight in Europe has also begun to grow, which is the main component of the demand for ultra-large container ships. According to Platou's data, in June this year, shipowners around the world ordered only three container ships, and the capacity was below 3000TEU. In the first half of 2014, there were 74 new container ship orders, 33 of which had a capacity of more than 10,000 TEU, accounting for more than two-thirds of the total capacity of 620,000 TEU. Order growth rate is much lower than the average level in recent years. In 2013, there were 247 container ship orders with a total capacity of 1.97 million TEU. In 2012, a total of 240 ships were ordered with a total capacity of 1.9 million TEU.
The change in the above order volume seems to be related to the ups and downs of the P3 alliance. The establishment of the P3 alliance has brought a large number of orders for ultra-large container ships, which have a capacity of 13000TEU to 18000TEU. At the beginning of this year, as the container shipping industry began to wait for the approval results of the P3 alliance, the order tide gradually stopped.
